The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was established in 1946 in Mysuru in an area of 25 acres in a serene sylvan atmosphere as a private institution to impart engineering education through conventional as well as contemporary methods. It is a grant-in-aid institution approved by the AICTE and whose four UG programs and one PG program are accredited by the NBA under tier-1. It got autonomous status from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi in 2007, and all the departments of NIE are recognized as research centers under VTU and the AICTE for the QIA.

NIE spent Rs. 3.21 crores as capital expenditure in 2021, of which 3.11% spent on procuring books, journals, and e-resources for the library, a considerable 7.68% spent on buying new equipment and software for quality research, merely 62.11% spent on engineering workshops, and the remaining 27.1% spent on the creation of capital assets. In 2020, the capital expenditure was Rs. 8.05 crores and it was around Rs. 4.58 crores in 2019.

NIE spent over Rs. 34.59 crores in 2021 as operational expenditure, of which a massive 92.78% spent on paying salaries to professors and supporting staff, a modest 6.99% spent on maintaining academic infrastructure, and the remaining merely 0.23% spent on Seminars/Workshops/Conferences. Spending as operational expenditures were Rs. 46.32 crores in 2020 and Rs. 53.20 crores in 2019.

At NIE, a significant number of 867 students got admission to UG degree a bulky 87.54% of them graduated, of whom 70.95% got placements at top companies, and 12 were selected for higher studies in 2021; a significant 82.18% of students graduated, of whom 81.08% got placements and 81 were selected for higher studies in 2020; and a huge 93.06% of students graduated, of whom 55.45% got placements and 39 were selected for higher studies in 2019.

At NIE in PG programs, all of the students graduated, of whom 42.40% got placements at top companies, nonetheless, no one was selected for higher studies in 2021; a huge 93.38% of the students graduated, of whom 60.84% got placements, and 3 were selected for higher studies in 2020; and a massive 96.34% of the students graduated, of whom 70.47% got placements and 9 were selected for higher studies in 2019.

Campus Festivals at NIE

TechNIEks is the annual techno-cultural fest celebrated on the campus for three days in March where a barrage of technical events and a spectrum of colorful cultural events are organized to make students in a festive mood and to ward off nostalgia due to long studies in the classrooms. Many stage-stopping events such as Battle of Bands, Traditional Dress Day, Sangeet Shatranj (Music Competitions), etc., are organized to make students enthralled. Besides these, social awareness programs are also conducted for creating awareness. Therefore, this festival makes not only students enthralled but also well-versed in current trending technologies, and gives them a platform to showcase their technical skills and cultural artistry.


As NIE is in Mysuru, one of the important cities in Karnataka, it has a good transport system along with a railway station and an airport. Both Mysuru Railway Station which is at a distance of 3.9 km away and Mysuru Airport which is around 9.5 km away from the institution are available to reach the institution, therefore students from anywhere can commute to this institution easily.

How to Get Admission at NIE

For UG Course: Candidates who passed or appeared the PUC/+2 or any other equivalent exam thereto and English as one of the subjects with Mathematics and Physics along with any one of the Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Computer Science/Electronics with a minimum of 45% marks (50% for candidates who apply through management quota) (40% for SC/ST for Cat. 1, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B candidates) need to take and clear CET/COMED-K/JEE entrance examinations for admission to UG programs. 

For PG Courses: Candidates who passed a degree equivalent to BE in the respective stream with a minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC Cat. I candidates) with a valid GATE score are admitted to PG programs

Fee Structure at NIE

The student needs to pay approximately Rs. 9.47 lakhs as total fees for the UG course at NIE, however, the saving grace is they can get a good salary of Rs. 5 LPA at top companies, so they get back this amount in a year.
