Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) was established as an intermediate college by Ghanshyam Das Birla in Pilani, Rajasthan in an area of 328 acres. During WWll, the Government of India established a technical training center in Pilani to train technicians for defense services and industries. In 1946, it was set up as Birla Engineering College with a degree program in electrical and mechanical engineering. Professor V. Lakshminarayan was the first Vice-Principal of this institute who introduced UG programs and PG programs in electronics. In 1964, the Birla College of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy, and Science were merged to form BITS with Dr. G.D. Birla as the founding Chairman. Ford Foundation helped BITS financially and technically and it helped to ally with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1964-70 and faculty at MIT reshaped the curriculum of BITS Pilani to improve the quality of education, and in 1964, it became the deemed university for its good performance in technology and science. It has campuses in Dubai, UAE, Goa, and Hyderabad and it is the first institution in India to have overseas campuses.

How to Get Admission at BITS Pilani
