The National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) was established in 1967 in Silchar, Assam to produce trained manpower for expanding Indian industries. However, it did not function immediately due to some problems; after ten years of its establishment, it finally started functioning and started academic programmes in 1977. In 2002, the Government of India accredited it with a deemed university status due to its excellent performance, and in 2007, this institute was declared as the Institute of National Importance due to its significance in northeast parts of India.

Campus Festivals at NIT Silchar

Incandescence is the annual cultural festival being organized in February to showcase the cultural flavors of north-east India. Thundermarch is the annual metal fest celebrated along with Incandescent, where many noted bands from India and the world are participating.

Tecnoesis is the annual technological fest where many events on current technologies like robotics are being conducted. Here, many students present their papers at this fest and quizzes are being organized.

POSUA is the annual celebration of Rongali Bihu in NIT that marks the beginning of the Hindu solar calendar year. It showcases Assamese culture.

How to Get Admission at NIT Silchar

For UG courses at NIT Silchar: Students who passed or appeared in the +2 exam can take Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and should get minimum JEE Main scores/rank required at this institution. Admission is given through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

For PG courses: Students who passed a bachelor’s degree or appeared in the final exam can take the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and should get valid GATE scores to get admission to this institution; seats are given through a centralized allocation procedure.
