National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra (NIT Kurukshetra) was established in 1963 as a Regional Engineering College under a third five-year plan to produce the skilled manpower in engineering science & technology and to foster the integrity of the nation. It was started under the joint venture of the Government of India (GOI) and the Government of Haryana. In the beginning, it started functioning from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and Thapar Institute of Technology, Patiala. In 1965, it started functioning at its present campus. In 2002, it was accredited as a deemed university by the GOI and renamed as National Institute of Technology.
