National Institute of Technology Agartala (NIT Agartala) initially started as Tripura Engineering College in 1965 in Agartala Tripura with basic three engineering departments, namely, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering in a view to developing engineers in the national and international standard to cater to the requirement of ever-growing the indian industry. It had been affiliated with the University of Calcutta until the inception of Tripura University. Later, it was affiliated with Tripura University. In 2006, it was elevated as the National Institute of Technology with a deemed university status and has become the Institute of National Importance.
