Punjab Technical University Kapurthala (PTU Kapurthala) was established in 1997 in Kapurthala Punjab as a state university in an area of 78.16 acres in a green serene atmosphere to promote technical, management, and pharmaceutical education at degree level and also at a higher level in the state of Punjab. It was renamed Inder Kumar Gujral Punjab Technical University after I.K. Gujral, the former Priminister of India, in 2015 to honor him.

For UG courses at PTU Kapurthala: Candidates who passed the +2 exam or any other equivalent recognized exams with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subject/Computer Science need to take clear JEE (Main) to get admission to UG courses, however, candidates who have passed diploma in any Engineering Trade from Punjab State Board of Technical Education & Industrial Training, Chandigarh or Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal (SLIET) or certificate course of SLIET after exhausting diploma course of SLIET, or any such examination from any other recognized State Board of Technical Education, or merit in the +2 exams after exhausting JEE (Main) rank are also eligible to get admission to UG courses.

For PG courses: Candidates who passed the UG degree with a minimum of 50% (45% for reserved candidates) need to take and clear the GATE exam, however, if the seats remain vacant after filling GATE-qualified candidates, then seats are filled based on the merit in the qualifying exam.
