It was moved in 1958-60 at the heart of Chandigarh, sectors 14 and 25, the newly built capital of Punjab after the bifurcation of the Indian subcontinent. A beautiful red sandstone campus in an area of 550 acres with a serene atmosphere was designed for the Panjab University by Pierre Jeanneret under the general guidance of Le Corbusier who architectured Chandigarh City. It had its regional centers at Rohtak, Shimla, and Jalandhar, and its affiliated colleges were located in the respective states and a union territory until the reorganization of Punjab in 1966. With the reorganization of Punjab, the University became an Inter-State Body Corporate catering to the newly organized States of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
