Jadavpur University was started as National Council for Education (NCE) in 1906 to help the country to be self-sufficient in literary, scientific & technological fields. Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick, Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury, Sir Rash Behari Ghoah, Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh helped to form this institution by their financial and intellectual help.

In 1910, the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education Bengal which took care of Bengal Technical Institute was amalgamated with NCE. In 1995, the Government of West Bengal and the Government of India concurrently enacted the necessary legislation to establish Jadavpur University. Jadavpur University has 58 acres in the main campus with all facilities.

In 2021, 133 students who were admitted to PG 3-year programme, of whom 95.49% were awarded graduations and all of them got placements and remaining 19 were selected for higher studies; 90.2% students were awarded graduations, of whom 94.31% got placements and 15 were selected for higher studies in 2020; and 84.76% students were awarded graduations and none of them got placement or selected for higher studies in 2019.

In the PhD research programme, Jadavpur University admitted 1175 students of whom 113 were awarded graduations in 2021, and 133 and 158 students were awarded graduation in 2020 and 2019, respectively.
