The College of Engineering Trivandrum, Thiruvananthapuram (CET Thiruvananthapuram) was established in 1939 as the first Engineering College in Trivandrum Kerala (then Travancore state) to achieve national-level excellence and international visibility in every facet of engineering education. The first classes were started in 1939 during the reign of the Travancore King Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma and as the head of the then Travancore State. Initially, it was housed in the previous office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer (present PMG Office) and Maj T.H. Mathewman, a Britisher as the first Principal. Starting as a constituent College of Travancore University, it had an initial intake of 21 students each to Degree and Diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches. Its administration came under the control of the Government of Kerala after the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late fifties. Then it was shifted to its present campus which has an area of 125 acres in a green serene atmosphere.
