Annamalai University was established in 1929 in Annamalai Nagar Chidambaram Tamilnadu in an area of spacious 950 acres in a serene sylvan atmosphere by the Government of Tamilnadu by amalgamating the Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College, and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College which had been handed over to the Local Government in 1928 in response to its request, and these were established by Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar in 1928 to provide education and Tamil literature to less-privileged people. In 2013, it became an affiliating type university by the Government of Tamilnadu notification, and colleges in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, and Mayilduthurai have become affiliated with this university.
