Anna University was established in memory of late Tamil Nadu C.M. Dr C.N. Annadurai in 1978, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, by bringing together the College of Engineering (COE) (est. 1794), Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) (est. 1944), Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) (est. 1949) and School of Agriculture and Farming (SAF) (est. 1957). It has an area of 189 acres on the main campus with a natural environment. In 2001, this university was converted into an affiliating type university by bringing together all the engineering colleges in the state and was again reconverted into the unitary type in 2010. In 2012, it was again converted into an affiliating type university by bringing all the engineering colleges in the state together under one umbrella to ensure uniform quality of education in engineering. It constitutes 4 university department campuses (COE, ACT, MIT, & SAF), 13 constituent colleges, 3 regional campuses in Tirunelveli, Madurai and Coimbatore, and 593 affiliated colleges either government or government-aided or self-financing.
