He first started school at Moradabad in 1858 and Gazipur in 1863. In 1877, he founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriented college in Aligarh. It was the first purely residential educational institution set up either by the government or public in India, and then a school for girls was established in 1907. In 1920, the college was transformed into the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
