The idea of starting university for Muslims in India to educate them and keep them in the race against time was conceived after the first Indian Independence in 1857 by Sir Syed. He first started school at Moradabad in 1858 and Gazipur in 1863. In 1877, he founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriented college in Aligarh. It was the first purely residential educational institution set up either by the government or public in India, and then a school for girls was established in 1907. In 1920, the college was transformed into the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
